I HAVE LEFT YOU FOREVER

I slipped away while you were distracted—
it's too late to catch me now. The space
between us, formerly just huge, has become
totally insane, although you probably
haven't even noticed that yet. You probably
haven't noticed that I'm a long way off
from you already—with every second further—
and that with each step I accelerate. You and I are
separated by an infinitely unspooling gulf, although
I doubt you've noticed that. I doubt you're aware
that the distance between us, laid end to end,
would stretch to the moon and back, again and again—
that I'm scrambling over sand dunes, leaping
through treetops, slapping my feet on the tiled
floor of the bazaar, as I escape from you forever—
or that in the time it's taken to read these sixteen lines
I have crossed the only bridge over the river and
detonated the charges at the bases of the pylons. And
you're still creeping around the house. Not
telling anyone shit. Whispering
your theories like
the world's loneliest
scientist. Not noticing
how everything's changed.
I knew you wouldn't.
That's what made it so easy
